A shooting in downtown Sacramento early on Sunday has left at least six people dead and nine people wounded, the police said.
Details about the shooting were unclear, but the police had initially told members of the public to avoid several blocks near the city’s Capitol Park area because they were investigating a shooting with “multiple victims.”
On Sunday morning, the authorities confirmed that the police had located 15 victims, including six dead, but they did not provide further details.
Darrell Steinberg, the mayor of Sacramento, said on Twitter that “words can’t express my shock and sadness this morning.”
“The numbers of dead and wounded are difficult to comprehend,” Mr. Steinberg said. “We await more information about exactly what transpired in this tragic incident.”
This is a developing story.
